New Year’s Day double parkrun

We kicked off 2016 at 9am on New Year’s Day at Woodhouse Moor. Dragging oneself out of bed at 7am any day of the year is in itself no easy feat, however what we had chosen to do today was something a little bit special.

We started with Woodhouse Moor parkrun, a  5km, three lap course of the park with a good helping of puddles! I averaged a nice steady 8 minute miles finishing parkrun number one of 2016 in 24 minutes 17 seconds.

Woodhouse Moor – Before it all began….

We had decided to do the double, two parkruns in one day! New Year’s Day is the only day of the year where you can do two different parkruns in one morning. Temple Newsam parkrun would be our second at 10.30am.

There was just the small matter of how to get there… Run of course! It’s 6 miles from Woodhouse Moor in the centre of Leeds to Temple Newsam parkrun east of the city centre. Temple Newsam’s slightly later start time  made running in-between possible for the first time (for anyone who couldn’t run a sub 20 minute 5km!) We expected to have an hour to complete it in, easy, if we stuck to sub 9.30 miles we’d get there comfortably.

After the Woodhouse Moor pre run briefing over ran slightly, due to all the amazing people running parkrun anniversaries, our hour turned into less than 50 minutes…

4 of us set off and ploughed on for what would be a very steady, very long 6 miles  – with many roundabouts. Despite Emma’s promises that it was just beyond the next roundabout, the roundabouts just kept on coming! As did they achy legs, hills and the miles. Thank you for navigating and the great company!

As we neared Temple Newsam, 10.30am was fast approaching so we sent the boys on ahead to warn them we were on our way and not to start without us!

We arrived at Temple Newsam in time to run the slightly delayed second parkrun of the day. I was now 9 miles in and my legs were feeling anything but fresh! After a gentle jog round a very muddy and very busy Temple Newsam and I’d finished the second park run of the day in 29 minutes.

Looking relieved after the second parkrun – 12miles done! (Ian ran away before the photo!)

Temple Newsam broke attendance records on New Year’s Day with a whopping 483 runners, 176 more than the previous record of 307, also set on New Year’s Day the year before!

I also would just like to take the chance to say well done to everyone else who managed to get themselves out of bed, whilst it was still dark on New Year’s Day to run parkrun whether it was 1 or 2 or even the crazy run inbetween too! But more importantly a MASSIVE THANK YOU to the volunteers not just on New Year’s Day but throughout 2015
